Contract Description:
The CTUIR Walla Walla River Basin Fish Habitat Enhancement Project, initiated in 1996, is an ongoing effort to monitor, protect, enhance, and restore the natural form and function of rivers, floodplains, and native fish habitat. Restoration project location and selection criteria is derived from various managerial guidance documents and based upon identification and addressing factors limiting salmonid production including the Middle Columbia River Steelhead Recovery Plan (NMFS 2009), Bull Trout Recovery Plan (USFWS 2015), Walla Walla Subbasin Plan (NPCC 2004), Umatilla River Vision (Jones et al. 2008), Lower Walla Walla River Geomorphic Assessment and Action Plan (CTUIR 2014), and the Lower Mill Creek Final Habitat and Passage Assessment and Strategic Action Plan (CTUIR 2017). The Project is responsible for improving physical habitat conditions for ESA-Listed salmonid species.

Major tasks to be completed by the project in this funding cycle include:

1) Walla Walla River Forks Confluence: Implement restoration actions along an approximately 0.75 mile reach of the river focusing on habitat complexity, floodplain reconnection, and post-construction riparian restoration.

2) Mill Creek Intake Dam Fishway: Complete modifications to the City of Walla Walla municipal water intake dam to bring the structure into compliance with established fish passage criteria.

3) South Fork Walla Walla River Adaptive Management: Complete limited adaptive management of previously completed habitat projects on the South Fork Walla Walla River to ensure continued function following major floods in February 2020.

4) Upper Walla Walla River Assessment and Action Plan: Complete inventory and assessment for the upper Walla Walla Basin used to identify and prioritize future projects.

5) Enhance riparian vegetative components at restoration project sites: Plant new vegetation and maintain previously planted areas.
